It’s the sale I look forward to most all year.  Happens only twice a year in the Spring and in the Fall.  I always wait for April’s sale to stock up on all my Spring and Summer needs.  Most of the cute, high-in-demand pieces at Shopbop often sell out before it ever goes on sale so 25% off your entire purchase is pretty great.  Here are some of my picks from this year’s sale!

Enter code INTHEFAMILY14 at checkout.  Offer ends Thurs, 4/17 at 11:59 pm PST.  Some exclusions apply.

Painterly prints are in for 2014 and you can take them any way you like.  Bold and dramatic in primary colors or soft and pretty in pastels and neutrals.  I chose the latter.  I loved this dreamy, watercolor-esque print so much I had to get the top and the bottom and then wear them together.  Matchy matchy looks with coordinated tops and bottoms are still okay by me.

I thought this was such a fun and youthful look, I paired it with my trusty backpack and my new ugly sandals (aka birkenstocks).  I’m all ready for Spring now…if it would ever get here.

Pool Sliders

Aside from the mule, my next must have shoe for 2014 is the pool slider (also lovingly known as the ugly sandals.)  I’ll admit when these started to surface on the runways and on fashion insiders everywhere, I cringed a little.  While I love having fun with fashion and playing around with trends, I usually tend to stick to the “prettier” versions of those trends. Cool and edgy but still pretty has been the style I’m drawn to the most.  So, initially I hesitated on this ugly sandal trend but the more I saw it, the more I liked it and really, I’m a stay at home mom of 2 young kids.  Who am I to fight off the 1 trend that happens to be uber comfy and playground friendly?

And that is how I ended up with a pair of white Arizona Birkenstocks and I am so glad I did.  I love them paired with fun, casual outfits like a t-shirt and flippy skirt.  But, I think pool sliders really shine and feel current when paired with dressier office appropriate looks.  A slouchy navy pant suit with pool sliders?  Chic.  A pencil skirt and mesh sweater paired with Vince metallic sandals.  Love.

A crisp white or blue button down is such a classic staple and yet, feels so fresh and new this season.  I’ve been borrowing shirts from hubby’s closet because I love the oversized fit and the slightly starched stiffness on the fabric.  I cinched the shirt with a Theory obi belt I’ve had for years and then I added some shredded jeans to the mix.  I recently cut the hem of these jeans to ankle length and I like the rawness of the cut edge.

Have you ever borrowed a piece of clothing from the boys?

5 Years A Blogger

Five years ago today, I published the very first entry to this blog.

I had just had my first daughter a month prior in February of ’09. My mother was still in town helping me care for my newborn. I was extremely sleep deprived and constantly anxious from being a first time mom. One of those quiet evenings at home with my mom, it hit me like a ton of bricks. While my 28 year old peers were out building their careers and living single life to the fullest, here I was…in a career I knew wasn’t right for me, and now with a baby in my arms. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve always wanted to be a mother and it’s been the greatest joy and privilege of my life. And yet, at that moment, all I could think was my pipe dreams of ever doing something in fashion was just that, a pipe dream. I started lamenting to my mom about all the coulda shoulda woulda’s of my life choices and wallowing in those baby blues. It was then that she suggested I just start doing something that I’m passionate about. Whether it’s writing about it in a journal or collecting inspiration…just to physically do something that I’m interested in even from home, even as a hobby. And that very night, I started brainstorming blog names.

The last five years have been such an incredible ride for me. What started as a place for me to just write my thoughts about anything and everything has organically developed into a more fashion focused blog. Through the years, I’ve been able to connect and collaborate with the most interesting bloggers, business owners, and fashion insiders. I got to attend a handful of shows at NYFW, which was a thrill for this stay at home mama! More recently, this little blog of mine has started generating a small income through ads, commissions and product endorsements.  And probably most fulfilling of all, I’ve developed real relationships with many of my readers through email and instagram.  This is all more than I ever dared to imagine when I first sat down to start this blog.

THE FUTURE:plaid-jacket-ripped-jeans

The industry is growing so quickly and newer, younger versions of myself are starting blogs by the minute. It’s so easy to grow discouraged and want to give up and I’ll admit I’ve been there many times.  Instead, I’ve been putting my efforts into staying current, evolving and writing unique content.  I’ve started working with an incredible photographer (amazing Kina Wicks) and I’m attending a blogger conference in April.  I can’t wait to provide you with even more engaging, informative and aesthetically pleasing posts going forward.

TO MY READERS: transition summer dress to winter

Often, I wonder if anyone is out there.  Especially now with instagram, it’s become more of a challenge to get readers to actually click over to the blogs.  So I’m especially thankful for my loyal readers who have been with me through this journey.  Of course, I’ve shared lots of outfits and shopping codes but looking back at my posts, there was so much more.  Major milestone moments like birth stories of my children, turning the big 3-0 and even embarrassing stories from my childhood.  Without your readership, this blog would simply cease to exist so thank you thank you thank you! I wanted to end this post by sharing a few snippets of recent emails I received from you guys and express again how encouraging they are to me.

I’ve been wanting to drop you a line to let you know that I absolutely love your blog. It’s very entertaining. I love the photos & the style. Your blog inspires me to be a little more fashion conscious.
