I am a big fan of this sorta dowdy, sorta large, sorta nerdy blazer.  It looks like it belongs to your old Chemistry teacher from back in high school, or at least mine.  But, I could see the potential.  The right amount of distress on your denim, the right pop of leopard on your feet, a crumpled up boyfriend t-shirt (okay husband if we’re being technical) and you’re on your way to a whole different look, far removed from Ol’ Mr. Chem.

Even though or maybe as a direct result of being in “the coldest month of the century”, I can’t stop thinking about warmer days and Spring trends.  One of my favorite trends for this upcoming season is the classic white shirt and the shirt dress.  You can keep it really classic and simple or you can now find unique white shirt dresses with eye-catching details.

I love how this one by Derek Lam is very simple from the front, but the back has this great separates effect.  It looks like a top and a pleated skirt, rather than a dress.  Oh and pleats are another huge trend for 2014 so loving that you can incorporate two trends in one look!

I paired the dress with my favorite new biker boots from Asos.  The one thing I will mention is that the side zipper is fake.  You actually have to untie and unbuckle every time you put them on and off.  But I think it’s worth the effort, considering the low price!  Will you be wearing a shirt dress this Spring??

Wide leg pants are back in a major way and some are even saying they will replace the ever popular skinny jeans.  I’m still hanging on to my favorite skinnies but I loved trying out this wider style.  I decided to go more masculine with the entire look with a striped button down messily tucked and a long tweed coat.  I added my go-to tribal necklace and my new bright orange CDG pouch for some interest.  To counter balance all the androgynous elements, I topped everything off with a large bow in the palest of pinks.

Vintage Dresser Find!

We’ve started purchasing pieces for the new home here and there and this find from last week has been my most exciting moment yet.  I found this small business (Twice Loved Furniture Creations) on Craigslist and I fell in love with her work.  They are antique pieces of furniture that she lovingly and tastefully refinishes.

The quality of the furniture is unbelievable.  The pieces are extremely heavy, indicating high quality solid wood.  There is beautiful wear on the pieces while all the drawers are still functioning well.  The piece I bought was an American of Martinsville piece, which reassured me even more about the quality.  The listed price was $440, which in my opinion is a great price for such a large, beautifully refinished dresser.

She updates her facebook page frequently with new pieces.  Definitely Like her page on facebook to see the updates.  And if you find something you love, act quickly.  There were many people interested in the piece I bought and instead of going to see it on the weekend as planned, I had to rush there on a Thursday to snatch it up first.

Suburban Migration

If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you’ll know that we are in the middle of a whole house renovation.  After 8 years of living in Chicago, we are getting ourselves prepared for the suburban migration.  We love our current neighborhood (Bucktown) so much but in the end, we decided to move for the great schools the suburbs have to offer.

We originally had our hearts set on building a house from the ground up but after almost a year of looking for land or a teardown house, we gave up on that dream.  We decided that it made more sense financially to just buy an older home and completely renovate the inside and update the exterior.  We closed on the home back in October and are knee deep in renovations at the moment.

Here are some pics from Instagram on the house…
