I love a good smock dress for summer.  When it’s sweltering outside, I don’t want thick denim shorts (no matter how short) or anything remotely fitted.  A smock dress in a super lightweight, breezy cut is the way to go.  Add a fringed bag for more movement and interest and a simple, strappy pair of sandals and you’re summer ready!  Bonus points for something turquoise!  And if you’re sporting a baby bump this summer like me, a smock dress is a great maternity option as well!

Dressing up the bump can be challenging especially when most of the maternity dresses out there seem to err on the side of matronly.  Like my previous pregnancies, I rely heavily on non-maternity fashions from affordable shops like Forever 21, ASOS, and TOPSHOP.  They help get me through the nine months in high style but with a low budget.

I got this ASOS floral dress in a larger size than I normally would to accommodate my expanding mid-section (and okay let’s be real, expanding everything else too…)  I love the romantic print on this dress and how the feminine florals contrasts with the deep plunge and curve accentuating fit.  If this dress were in vixen red, I wouldn’t go near it because it would feel too “in your face sexy” to me.  This print balances out the spiciness with more acceptable prettiness.  Perfect combination.  Did that make any sense to anyone??

Flowing Trench Coats

I’ve always appreciated the classic trench coat; structured, tailored and meant to last a lifetime.  But this season, a more flowing, draping, romantic version hit the scene and I was smitten.  I purchased mine several months ago but failed to write about it until now.

I’m loving the updated version of the classic coat.  The fabric is thin and almost silky so it lays beautifully like a sleek robe.  And the movement when you walk is dramatic and dreamy at the same time.

Since outerwear tends to cost more, I can appreciate the versatility of this piece.  Wear it over a pretty dress for a wedding or for work.  Top it over your tightest, shortest dress for a night out that still leaves something to the imagination.  Also goes well with skinny jeans and ankle boots as shown above.  My favorite way to wear it is to contrast the femininity with boyfriend jeans or shredded cutoff shorts.  An outfit post with my flowing trench coming soon!

burberry prorsum spring 2014

Burberry Prorsum Spring 2014 Ad

And the Burberry Prorsum Ad that inspired this outfit.  I loved every single look that walked down the Spring 2014 runway and have featured some of them here (like this pink confection!)  When I saw this ad, I knew that was how I wanted to look this Spring and I even created this perfect Spring look book here afterwards.  But really, how appropriate is it for this thirty something mama to stroll around Costco in a sheer lace skirt with only bloomers underneath?

I put together this toned down version of the look with a Forever21 crocheted skirt, my favorite slouchy tee, and this minty green moto jacket.  I think it still captures the general essence of the look but in a real life appropriate way.  Inspired by the Runway and translated into Real Way is a big part of what I do here and I hope you’ll give this look a try too!
